Background of the Study
Economic conditions profoundly influence language use in professional settings, particularly in high-stakes business environments. In Abuja, business leaders communicate in Nigerian English—a variety that incorporates both indigenous and global linguistic features. Pragmatic communication in this context includes the strategic use of politeness, indirect speech, and negotiated turn-taking to facilitate negotiations and decision-making (Okoro, 2023). Economic pressures such as market competition and corporate restructuring drive the need for clear, efficient communication while also necessitating a balance between formality and flexibility. Business leaders adapt their pragmatic strategies to reflect both traditional values and modern corporate norms. However, rapid economic changes and globalization may disrupt these established practices, potentially leading to misinterpretations and inefficiencies in communication. This study examines how economic factors shape pragmatic communication among Nigerian business leaders in Abuja by analyzing corporate meetings, interviews, and discourse samples. The goal is to identify key pragmatic markers that facilitate effective business interactions and to propose strategies that integrate economic imperatives with cultural linguistic practices.

Statement of the Problem
Economic factors are reshaping pragmatic communication in Nigerian English among business leaders in Abuja, creating challenges for maintaining clarity and cultural nuance (Okoro, 2023). The pressures of a competitive market often necessitate direct, efficient language use, which can conflict with traditional pragmatic markers of politeness and indirectness. This tension may lead to communication breakdowns and misinterpretations that affect business outcomes. Despite its importance, the specific impact of economic influences on pragmatic language remains underexplored, necessitating further research.

Objectives of the Study

  • To identify pragmatic markers in business discourse.

  • To assess the impact of economic factors on these markers.

  • To recommend strategies for balancing efficiency with cultural nuances.

Research Questions

  • How do economic factors influence pragmatic communication in business?

  • What pragmatic markers are affected by market pressures?

  • What strategies can improve clarity in business settings?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the effect of economic factors on pragmatic communication in Nigerian English among business leaders in Abuja. Its findings will benefit corporate communication trainers, business leaders, and policymakers by suggesting methods to harmonize global economic demands with culturally rooted communication practices (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to business communication in Abuja and does not extend to other sectors or informal contexts.

Definitions of Terms
